Thanks Jardine for these exercices.
Number 1 is very challenging...too me? Well, let's give it a try without using a dictionary, even if I'm craving to open it!
I/ EXPLAIN the difference between:
a) a tabloid and a quality paper: a tabloid concentrates on the sensational aspect of news, illustrated by a platheora of photos and stories published are not very reliable.
b) a journal and a magazine: a journal has dayly issues? As for a magazine, we're talking about weekly, monthly or even less frequent issues.
c) making a film in a studio and making films on locations: on locations refer to authentic settings as opposed to the ones created in studios.
d) an aerial and a satellite dish: a little bit technical for me. Through a satellite dish you'll be able to receive many more TV channels than via an aerial. Because it's called satellite dish, it seems that satellite plays a key role in the transmission but don't ask me to explain.
e) sub-titling and dubbing: when a movie's dubbed, there's a voice over, so instead of hearing the original voice of the actor, you hear the one of another actor who delivers the translated/adapted version of the original text. As for a sub-titled version, it requires the viewer to read the sub-titles/ translation of the original text.
II/ MATCH the 2 lists:
1- chat show: g- Talking to Oprah
-2- current affairs programme : f- The World This Week- -
3- detective story: a- Inspector Jack investigates
- 4-documentary : i- The Secret Life of Turtles
- 5- game show : - b- Win a CAr-
- 6- music programme:k-Saturday Night at the Music Hall
- 7- quiz- : - d- Brain to Britain
8-soap opera- : e- Dallas's Dynasty-
9- sports programme- : h- Match of the Week-
10- variety show- : j- This Week's Top CDs-
11- weather forecast: c- Tomorrow's Weather
III/ Each of these people can be found in either a newspaper office or a film studio. WHERE IS EACH PERSON MOST LIKEKY TO BE FOUND ?
- Film studio= actor- camera operator- - make-up artist- - continuity person : what we call script in French?
- News paper office: cartoonist- censor- columnist- critic- editor- foreign correspondant- sub-editor
IV / CHOOSE the right verb from the list and put it in the right form to complete the sentence.
1- This book has been published by Cambrige University Press
2- The film was shot on location in Siberia
3- Can you pick up Radio Tirana on your radio?
4- They show'The Titanic' on TV again tonight
5- Sunday newspapers come out once a week
6- Censors sometimes order films to be edited.
7- Some very good news programmes are broadcasted on the radio
8- It's a sub-editor's job to lay out the pages of a newspaper
9- Sub-editors are also often required to cut articles which are too long
10- Many British books are printed in Hong Kong
11- A remote control allows you to change channels from your sofa
Take care.

Nous disions THE PRESS >& THE MEDIA!
1- A tabloid is a popular newspaper which contains stories about film stars whereas a quality newspaper has a more serious approach to the news.
2- A journal is an academic magazine whereas a magazine is used more generally for hobby or other special interest magazines (garden, health,sports...)
3- Making a film in a studio means making a film in a special place owned by the film company where different sets are constructed for different films/ Making a film on locations means making the film in 'real' place, so that the film is shot against a backdrop of real countryside or buildings rather than against an artificial set.
4- These are both ways of receiving television signals but an aerial looks like (picture ! please...thanks!) a comb for hairy dogs whereas a satellite dish looks like THIS! --->(PICTURE x ....Fine!)=> a large shallow cereal bowl that 6 persons can share.
5- These are both ways of showing films in countries where a different language is spoken from a language in which the film was originally made. With sub-titling the translation of the script is written on the screen for the audience to read whereas with dubbing the audience hears actors reading a translation of the original script. (which I personally hate!= personal point of view!)
