Your sentence is understandable, but would probably be expressed differently by a native speaker.
.. when it comes to living in ...
... ,however much one tries to prepare. ...
Je sais que la deuxième partie n'a pas exactement le même sens, mais si on est bien préparé, il n'y aura pas de problème. Je présume que tu veux dire - malgré tous les efforts qu'on a faits pour se préparer. Si je me suis trompé dans mon interprétation, pardonne-moi.
