The comparative of inferiority
Message de nada1 posté le 31-03-2008 à 08:58:44
Hello,
Could we say that the comparative form:
not as+ adjective + as
Example: Jane is not as pretty as Margaret
is used for the comparative of the inferiority as well as of the inequality ?
ie. does the last form (inequality)exist in english grammar?or could we consider them as one?
Thank you

I think it should be clarified that Lucile's answers are very "technical". In common language, we rarely (if ever) use the phrase "less ... than". Rather, we use "not as ... as" to express inferiority. In common language we don't really have a special phrase to express inequality, since inequality is implied by superiority or inferiority.
However, speaking technically, "not as ... as" can in fact mean inequality without necessarily meaning inferiority, which leads to the following play on the phrase:
A: I want you to admit that you're not as good as me.
B: OK, I'm not as good as you.
A: Aha!! See, I was right! I'm the best!
B: I didn't say I was worse than you. I just said I'm not AS good as you. In fact, I'm better!!!

Note: Although we don't use "less ... than", where "..." is an adjective, we do use it where "..." is a(n uncountable) noun. In this case "less ... than" is equivalent to "not as much ... as".
There is less milk in the refrigerator than there was yesterday.
= There is not as much milk in the refrigerator as there was yesterday.
