A little story

Bonsoir. Dans le cadre de ma formation en anglais (bac +3) je dois écrire une petite histoire comprenant la phrase : "All at once I began to understand why I was being treated so well! "
Pouvez vous me corriger mes fautes s'il vous plait?

A few years ago, my best friend and I have been in Japan on holiday. When we arrived at the airpoirt, I have noticed that people looking at me in a strange way. I have heard whispers and seen flash lights when I walked. I didn't know what was going on!
One night, we came into a night club for fun. We were just ordered our drinks when a security guard came and told us that it was for members only. When we turned over, the man gazed longingly at me and started to apologize! He found us a table immediately. I was surprised and I began to fell a bit scared!
Next morning my friend went to buy us a newspaper. When she came back she was very pale and showed me the front page! I saw a women who was as alike as two peas in a pod. According to the article, she was a world-renowned dirty movie actress. All at once I began to understand why I was being treated so well!
We packed our suitcases as fast as we could. I was so embarrassed... It surely was an unforgetable experience!

Next morning my friend went to buy us a newspaper. When she came back she was very pale and showed me the front page! I saw a women who was as alike as two peas in a pod(two people can be like that, not one!)(you mean she looked like someone else/me!). According to the article, she was a world-renowned dirty movie actress(try and find other words). All at once I began to understand why I was being(past perfect) treated so well!
We packed our suitcases as fast as we could. I was so embarrassed... It surely was an unforgetable experience!

When we arrived at the airpoirt, I have noticed (erreur de temps, c'est du récit) that people looking (il manque l'auxiliaire au passé = preterit ing) at me in a strange way. I have heard (temps) whispers and seen flash lights when I walked. I didn't know what was going on!
One night, we came into a night club for fun. We were just ordered (construction du temps) our drinks when a security guard came and told us that it was for members only. When we turned over, the man gazed longingly at me and started to apologize! He found us a table immediately. I was surprised and I began to fell (voc, vous confondez deux verbes proches) a bit scared!
Next morning ( Next ne marche pas, vous êtes dans du récit au passé) my friend went to buy us a newspaper. When she came back she was very pale and showed me the front page! I saw a women ( a = singulier, women est pluriel)who was as alike as (structure de la comparaison à revoir) two peas in a pod. According to the article, she was a world-renowned dirty movie actress. All at once I began to understand why I was being treated so well!
We packed our suitcases as fast as we could. I was so embarrassed... It surely was an unforgetable experience!

Quand j'ai lu le texte,sans avoir le temps de corriger,et ...vous le faites si bien brettdallen et toi !...,j'ai failli penser pendant 2 secondes que la préposition 'in' était fausse à cause de 'have been'; c'était trompeur,et on va vous pardonner à tous deux ! même si vous n'avez pas rectifié de vous-mêmes

There seems to be some argument about the preposition "in" with regards to a country.
Yes, we can say "I have been in Japan" "I was in Japan"
That's the way I read it.
Where have you been? I've been in Japan!
Where were you last Easter? I was in Japan.
With the verb "go" there is always "to" after it.
Where did you go? I went to Japan.
I interpreted it as being - "A few years ago, my friend and I were in Japan on holiday. When we arrived at the airport ..... etc.
Hope this clears up my point.

I read the first two sentences again :
A few years ago, my best friend and I have been in Japan on holiday. When we arrived at the airpoirt, ...etc...
and because of the second sentence "when we arrived..." it seems to me necessary to use the verb "go" in the first sentence ( + a holiday):
A few years ago, my best friend and I went to Japan on a holiday. When we arrived at the airpoirt, ....
It seems to be the story of what happened at that time and they can't be "in" the country before arriving at the airport.
What do you think ?

Yes, of course you can say it any way you wish. The fact remains that with the verb "to be" it's preposition - in
the verb "to go" it's preposition - to
By the way, I have just read Seb's private message. He has used the verb "travel" (which actually does appear in this text) and yes, Seb, you can say "travel to". But not in a sense of telling a story about a trip somewhere. We usually use the word "go".
When I was in Paris last year, it rained every day.

To Intrepid: you're perfectly right, "be" can be followed by "in" and this is often the case when there's a place mentioned but here when I made the correction I wasn't thinking of "be" but "go"(I should have said: "wrong preposition + wrong verb"). The context is clear: the person is telling us about a trip to Japan(Japan, holiday, arrived, airport...) and not about a situation in the past(it's not "A few years ago, while we were in Japan, my friend and I visited Tokyo....").
To Lucile: why should I have corrected myself if I wasn't aware of making a mistake?
and was it a mistake?Hope that's settled!

I had actually interpreted the French to be "J'ai été or J'étais".
Whilst working this morning - I remembered - oh heck!! You can say travel + in (only if you use "be" again) (Oh that b.... be)
Where were you last year?
Oh! I was travelling in Australia. (meaning various destinations in that country).
I know your English is great Brett and you have made a little "typing error" in your sentence "A few years ago, with present perfect. Yowee!!

Le problème ne vient-il pas d'ailleurs?
A) A few years ago (daté,donc rejet dans le passé révolu> simple past or Past continuous avec "to stay"..)My best friend and I were (= were staying)in Japan on holiday..(Phrase d'introduction,donc tout étant présenté..on va à la ligne.)
B ) A few years ago, my best friend and I went to Japan for a holiday.A la ligne ,aussi..
and all that was just unforgettable.
En grammaire comme ailleurs..on peut ne pas être péremptoire.(même spécialistes, nous pouvons nous tromper)

Thank you Violet for your comments, it has actually been quite an interesting subject - the use of prepositions in English (and god dammit.. in French) is a sticky one!!
