Message de here4u posté le 27-02-2020 à 16:07:21 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear Friends!

) Sorry, Maxwell! Continue à te poser de bonnes questions (auxquelles tu réponds très souvent seul, intuitivement, d’ailleurs … ) et demande-moi si tu es vraiment bloqué … J’en ferai « profiter » tout le monde ! (Errr… I mean, if I find a satisfactory answer! )
This exercise is a and the correction will be online on Saturday, March 14, late at night.

I)Translate into French:

In the silence she could hardly fail to hear his regular breathing. When she had reassured herself that her movements had not disturbed him she stepped, with infinite caution, across the room. On a small table by the window a cineraria was growing in a pot. Nicky watched her now with his eyes wide open. The plant was evidently placed quite loosely in the pot, for taking it by the stalks she lifted it out; she put the banknotes in the bottom of the pot, and replaced the plant. It was an excellent hiding-place. No one could have guessed that anything was concealed under that richly-flowering plant. She pressed the earth down with her fingers and then, very slowly, taking care not to make the smallest noise, crept across the room and slipped back into the bed.
«Chéri.» she said, in a caressing voice.
Nicky breathed steadily, like a man immersed in a deep sleep. The little lady turned over on her side and disposed herself to slumber. But though Nicky lay so still his thoughts worked busily. He was extremely indignant at the scene he had just witnessed, and to himself he spoke his thoughts with vigour.
«She’s nothing but a damned tart. She and her dear little boy and her husband in Morocco. My eye! She’s a rotten thief, that’s what she is. Took me for a mug. If she thinks she’s going to get away with anything like that, she’s mistaken.»

W. Somerset MAUGHAM, Collected Short Stories.

II)EXPRESSION (optional): «If she thinks she’s going to get away with anything like that, she’s mistaken.»

Express Nick’s stream of consciousness and what he will do, or what, in your opinion, he SHOULD do. (Write his thoughts in the first person, and narrate as you like… About 200 words + or – 10% ) Have fun!
(These essays will be corrected on the Forum and when the grammar is concerned, can be corrected by any of you! [Oh dear! I hope it won’t be too messy… Be careful, it may…

I give you THE FORCE (but will keep some of it for me, if you don’t mind! )

ADDENDUM IMPORTANT
Hello!

Nicky did not feel quite safe till he got out of the hotel. The dawn had broken. The sky was unclouded, and in the harbour the yachts and the fishing-boats lay motionless on the still water. On the quay fishermen were getting ready to start on their day’s work. The streets were deserted. Nicky took a long breath of the sweet morning air. He felt alert and well. He also felt as pleased as Punch. With a swinging stride, his shoulders well thrown back, he walked up the hill and along the gardens in front of the Casino-the flowers in that clear light had a dewy brilliance that was delicious-till he came to his hotel. Here the day had already begun. In the hall porters with mufflers round their necks and berets on their heads were busy sweeping. Nicky went up to his room and had a hot bath. He lay in it and thought with satisfaction that he was not such a mug as some people might think. After his bath he did his exercises, dressed, packed, and went down to breakfast. He had a grand appetite. No continental breakfast for him! He had grapefruit, porridge, bacon and eggs, rolls fresh from the oven, so crisp and delicious they melted in your mouth, marmalade, and three cups of coffee. Though feeling perfectly well before, he felt better after that.

Double DOSE of THE FORCE...

I have been deceived and made fun by a slut. Now the better thing I should do is to calm down and carefully think how to get out of this mess, without
causing anything that would be harmful to my career of tennis player.
But, at the same time, it would be a real nonsense give up the money won.
So, I have to wait her to be deep sleeping, then I get dressed and after recovering the money from the pot I’ll get out the hotel, leaving
a banknote on her bedside as a sign of contempt.

Great excerpt and nice exercise. I thank you very much and hope you have a great week.

So long.

BONJOUR HERE4U,
Indeed, I remember a fower- pot story . It must have been a long time ago ,So here is my translation without researching the old translation.

READY TO BE CORRECTED
In the silence she could hardly fail to hear his regular breathing. When she had reassured herself that her movements had not disturbed him she stepped, with infinite caution, across the room. On a small table by the window a cineraria was growing in a pot. Nicky watched her now with his eyes wide open.
If she thinks she’s going to get away with anything like that, she’s mistaken.»t for me, if you don’t mind!

READY TO BE CORRECTED

Hello Here4U
Here's my try. I particularly appreciate this new exercise where we can correct each other. That's what we also need in a forum. Congratulations for the idea

I. Translate into French:

Somerset MAUGHAM, Collected Short Stories.

II)EXPRESSION: «If she thinks she’s going to get away with anything like that, she’s mistaken.»
Express Nick’s stream of consciousness and what he will do, or what, in your opinion, he SHOULD do. (Write his thoughts in the first person, and narrate as you like… About 200 words + or – 10% )

"Ah women! All the same! Bitches! They make you believe they're in love with you just to nick your dough! In any way, they're nothing more than money pits!
That will teach me to hit someone on! What a fool I was to think a woman like that could be interested in a young boy, especially a married one with a child! I should have known better!
I should have listened to my father instead of losing my time, my energy and my money with that slut!" (89)

Obviously, that's what he thought at that time, in a fit of anger after being dispossessed of his money so slyly...
Of course this misfortune would teach him a lesson; then he would get back on his feet in no time. Well, you can't expect an inexperienced young boy not to make any mistake at all, can you? Next time, he would probably be more cautious, get to know more about other people before making a move, not take anyone for granted, and think more with his head instead of his ... heart (not to say anything else...) (99)

Total = 188 words

IIbis. These essays will be corrected on the Forum and when the grammar is concerned, can be corrected by any of you!

Dear HERE HERE A COMMENT ON CORRECTIONS
Dear Maxwell

2)
but most often ; le dictionnaire propose cette traduction pour : le plus souvent, comme Magie et as often as possible pour : le plus souvent possible
camera set all over the,,, = placer ,disposer donc Magie aurait raison
3) set it all over
JOE 39
sa phrase I have been deceived and made fun of by a slut.
j'aurais mis pour dire : j'ai été déçu ( on aurait pu mettre vexé ) = ( to be offended)
Ma prase serait:je n'aime pas qu'une pute se moque de moi I don't like being made a fool of by a slut ?????

2) to be sleepling deeply devrait se dire to be deeply asleep (à vérifier par Here) (merci

to appropriate veut dire s'adjuger quelque chose .

2/ Expression

What a bitch! and how foolish I was, but who laughs last, laughs the best. She will remember it.
I have just to wait for her is asleep and then, I'll get up at my turn. With many precautions, I'll reach the flowerpot and take the banknotes. Then I'll write a note: 'Dear Virginia, thanks for the fantastic night we spent together, it was great and I will never forget it. But, I have forgotten to tell you I was married and my wife, which was on a trip in Marocco with our two daughters, returns today. So you will understand that I have to leave earlier that we would have both wanted it. You will always stay engraved in my memory as a great Love . Nicky'. Then I'll put the note into the pot with the Cineraria above, I'll take my clothes discreetly. Finally, I'll get dressed in the corridor and definitely vanish from her life.
That is what I am going to do.

Hello Here4u,

Translate into French:

2nd part

I really am a daddy’s boy. All night long I played at the casino I’ve lost a lot and in the end I won. Then I met this young girl and I enjoyed talking with her. She was smart and good-looking I liked her. When she asked me to take her home to show me her little boy’s picture I thought there was a fly somewhere but I followed her and what happened next serves me right .. First I felt I had been swindled ..then I realized that the money she had stolen was ill-gotten money and that she certainly needed it more than me after all she really had a little boy to raise. Thus I decided to do as if there was nothing amiss. I turned over and went back to sleep.(130)

Thank u I enjoyed it -

J'ai hésité pour I lost vs I've lost. Mais si on met in the end I won au lieu de I've won, je ne vois pas pourquoi on mettrait I've lost
J'ai aussi hésité sur le temps de : serves "what happened next serves me right"

Hello !

(certains me l'ont demandé)

On va essayer.

I have been deceived and made fun OF by a slut. Now the (better = best) thing I should do is to calm down and carefully think how to get out of this mess, without causing anything that would be harmful to my career of tennis player.
But, at the same time, it would be a real nonsense xx(= TO) give up the money I HAD won.
So, I have to wait XXX(= FOR) her to be deepLY ( sleeping= asleep = fast asleep) , then I (get= wrong tense…=will get…) dressed and after recovering the money from the pot I’ll get out the hotel, leaving a banknote on her bedside as a sign of contempt. TTBien ! Bravo.

I am going to get dressed, take my money back under the plant, take a sheet of paper in my jacket and write to her :
« You were sleeping so deeply, like an angel, that I did not want to wake you up. Thank you for these delicious moments. Sorry,I couldn't resist (approprieting)/ taking) your pretty flower pot in remembrance of you. ( That’s a good one!

(What a shame all this story THIS STORY IS SUCH A SHAME !! Obviously, that's what he thought at that time, in a fit of anger after being dispossessed of his money so slyly...
Of course this misfortune would teach him a lesson; then he would get back on his feet in no time. Well, you can't expect an inexperienced young boy not to make any mistake at all, can you? Next time, he would probably be more cautious, get to know more about other people before making a move, not take anyone for granted, and think more with his head instead of his ... heart (not to say anything else...)

camera set all over the,,, = placer ,disposer donc xxx aurait raison Oui !
3) set it all over To SET veut Dire aussi pour un objet : placer ,mettre, poser OK

sa phrase I have been deceived and made fun of by a slut. ((est correcte !)
j'aurais mis pour dire : j'ai été ‘déçu ( on aurait pu mettre (vexé ) = ( to be offended) Attention ! deceived ne veut pas dire « déçu » (disappointed !) mais TROMPé !
Ma pHrase serait : je n'aime pas qu'une pute se moque de moi I don't like being made a fool of by a slut ?????

2) to be sleepling deeply devrait se dire to be deeply asleep : les deux formes conviennent.
Lien internet
= « to be fast asleep » est idiomatique.

to appropriate veut dire s'adjuger quelque chose .
3) serenely = sereinement . C'est ce que je voulai(t dire.

She’s a real professional! far from being (a so sweet girl = SUCH A SWEET GIRL)in love at first glance...She takes me for an ugly? a gullible/ stupid) mug…
He who laughs last laughs longest!

What a bitch! and how foolish I was, but who laughs last, laughs the best. She will remember it.
I have just to wait for her (is asleep proposition infinitive = FOR HER TO BE ASLEEP) and then, I'll get up (at my turn= too. With many precautions, I'll reach the flowerpot and take the banknotes. Then I'll write a note: 'Dear Virginia, thanks for the fantastic night we spent together, it was great and I will never forget it. But, I have forgotten to tell you I was married and my wife, (which= WHO was on a trip in Marocco with our two daughters, returns today. So you will understand that I have to leave earlier (that we would have both wanted (it) XX= earlier thaN we would both have wanted to). You will always stay engraved in my memory as a great Love. Nicky'. Then I'll put the note into the pot with the Cineraria above, I'll take my clothes discreetly. Finally, I'll get dressed in the corridor and definitely vanish from her life.
That is what I am going to do.Très bonne expression… Bravo

What a bitch! and how foolish I was, but who laughs last, laughs ([] best= laughs longest!) She will remember it. I have just to wait for her to be asleep and then, I'll get up in turn(mouais ! « too » est plus fréquent !) With many precautions, I'll reach the flowerpot and take the banknotes. Then I'll write a note: 'Dear Virginia, thanks for the fantastic night we spent together, (voilà qui est très galant !) it was great and I will never forget it. (WOW !) But, I have forgotten to tell you I was married and my wife, who was on a trip in Marocco with our two daughters, returns today. So you will understand that I have to leave earlier than we would have both wanted to. You will always stay engraved in my memory as a great Love (love or lover ?) Nicky'.
Then I'll put the note into the pot with the Cineraria over it, I'll take my clothes discreetly. Finally, I'll get dressed in the corridor and definitely vanish from her life.
That is what I am going to do.
OK ! Un bon scénario !

To be continued !

Hello my dear Here4u ! Thanks a lot for your great exercises ! I love them !
FINISHED !

Here is my work:

My translation:

II)EXPRESSION (optional): «If she thinks she’s going to get away with anything like that, she’s mistaken.»

"We're going to have sex once again, as if nothing had happened, I'll think I'm in bed with a bomb, and then we'll have a good laugh! Her plant, in its pot, will not keep the stolen and hidden notes by this bitch! I'll take them back from it! I put myself in condition, to imagine that the one lying next to me is a dream creature with which I would dream of having an adventure ..., and I go all the way, I smash it and if she can have a heart attack it would be better! I am young and in good physical condition, she is old... I should have listened to Dad's advice... »
« I should not have gone up to this hotel... How dare she call me "dear", this traitor is just a whore, I'm sure she has no children and her husband is already cuckolded...: I'm going to teach him, it will serve as a lesson to this successful. Then, I’ll take my money, quickly but quietly I shall go away.»
« If she dies, the police will see that we had sex, and that she did not hold! » 200 words.

I give THE FORCE back to you, my dear Here4u !

Have a very sweet week, each of you!
See you soon.

I really am a daddy’s boy. All night long I played at the casino I(’ve) lost a lot and in the end I won(là? tu pourrais mettre du present eprfect) . Then I met this young girl and I enjoyed talking (with= to : Lien internet
) her. She was smart and good-looking, I liked her. When she asked me to take her home to show me her little boy’s picture I thought there was a fly (somewhere)= in the ointment) but I followed her and what happened next serves me right .. First I felt I had been swindled... then I realized that the money she had stolen was ill-gotten money and that she certainly needed it more than me(I did) after all she really had a little boy to raise(did she ?). Thus I decided to do as if there was nothing amiss. I turned over and went back to sleep.(130)TTB

What has she been up to? She's been deluded into thinking that she could vanish without a goodbye ? Well then, no, she doesn't mean quitting altogether...
Phew! She doesn't want to get away, look! she's standing motionless now peeping onto me making sure I'm sleeping. Let's not move! My eyes are half-closed (yet C’est quoi, ce yet ? en fin de phrase, il accompagne une négation, pas une affirmative ! )I can see her through my eyelashes.God damn it! she's moving now, head(ed= HEADING ) to my jacket. Whoa! She is stealing SOMETHING FROM in) my pocket but good gracious, my banknotes! what a crook she is! My little darling, I was eager to become your loving lover. But it's finished, you're done... Why! she's coming back to bed! How dare she? Does she imagine us to be friends again? Neverever!! If she thinks she's going to get away with anything like that, she's mistaken!
Here, you’re out of topic… You should have started where you finished… but your English is good.

I’m not sure I understand …

«She’s nothing but a damned tart. She and her dear little boy and her husband in Morocco. My eye! She’s a rotten thief, that’s what she is. Took me for a mug. If she thinks she’s going to get away with anything like that, she’s mistaken.»

W. Somerset MAUGHAM, Collected Short Stories.

(He was a man with blue eyes) Traduire "avec" est faire un anglicisme.

(7) Chez moi, on dit « My foot! » Chez d’autres aussi, semble-t-il … Lien internet

»// « She’s a thief ! » = « C’est une voleuse ! » ou « Cette femme est une voleuse ! »
- Took me for a mug… Attention au temps ! Non pas « elle me prend », mais « elle m’a pris » («took me"= she took me)
Somerset Maugham = 1874-1965-
(10) to get away with it= s’en tirer à bon compte, sans être puni.
