Ex 203/ Pouring rain in Paris...
Message de here4u posté le 15-05-2021 à 18:19:53 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear Friends,

Voilà votre nouvel exercice de version. Auteur très différent, thème différent, style différent ...
I) Translate into French:

Follow your Dream…
I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time he was there he introduced me by saying, « I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continuously interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then a drew a detailed floor-plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on the 200-acre dream watch.
«He put a great deal of his art into the project and the next day he handled it in to his teacher. Two days later he received the paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, ‘See me after class’.
«The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked. ‘Why did I receive an F?’
«The teacher said, « This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you…»

Jack Canfield, Chicken Soup for the Soul, 1997.

II) As this is just the first part of the extract, I want to keep the "free expression" [to know what you think about Canfield's ideas about success for the end of it...] Therefore, this time, I've chosen to give you a new exercice (I don't think we've ever worked on that...) about "Stress" (the "good stress", you know, the one you put on every word - in the right place - to make sure you're understood..."

I'll give you 12 words to stress on a syllable and you're going to classify them in three groups according to the syllable stressed: (FIRST SYLLABLE/ SECOND SYLLABLE / THIRD SYLLABLE)
ie: WINDOW will be: window OR window or 'window. Is that clear? I hope so!

Here are the words: INTRODUCED/ CONTINUALLY/ INTERRUPTED/ PROJECT/ RECEIVED/ FAMILY/ REQUIRES/ ORIGINAL/ UNREALISTIC/ RECONSIDER/ FINALLY/ FORTUNATELY.

This exercise is a and its correction should be online on Saturday, May 29th 2021.
May you go for it willingly and I'm sure THE FORCE WILL BE WITH YOU...

N’oubliez pas « Il apprend (présent simple en français) le chinois depuis 3 ans » : « he has been learning/ he has learnt …
(2) To introduce sb to sb else : présenter quelqu’un à quelqu’un d’autre.
(6) … « what he would do (conditionnel) when (conjonction de subordination temporelle) he grew up » (littéralement : grandirait – ne pas oublier de repasser au conditionnel …/ serait « grand » ( - mais en terminale (« senior ») on est déjà « grand »/ vieux (bof ! )/ adulte …
(environ I/2 hectare : un ha = 10 000 m2)
A square foot= 0, 092 m2 … Lien internet

ACCENTUATION :
First syllabe : 'PROJECT, 'FAMILY, 'FINALLY, 'FORTUNATELY
Second syllabe : CON'TINUALLY, RE'CEIVED, RE'QUIRES, O'RIGINAL
third syllabe : INTRO'DUCED, INTE'RRUPTED, UNREA'LISTIC, RECON'SIDER
