Message de here4u posté le 15-05-2018 à 18:36:26 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear Friends,

I)Translate into English:

Maxwell.

II) Translate into French:

Phil picked up a beer can from the coffee table in front of the settee. The table took up most of the space and Lucy usually kept it in a corner out of the way during the day-time. She had never cared for it, even though it had come free with the three-piece suite, but Phil said that it finished off the room and he liked the motif of vintage cars on the tiled surface.
« Our kids don’t know how lucky they are, he said, shaking the can to liven up the drop of beer inside and looking about the room with obvious satisfaction. « It’s a completely different world to what we were brought up in. »
« Different perhaps, but not necessarily better. »
« What do you mean ? »
« Well, when we grew up we could at least be sure of getting a job. »
« We’ll have to wait and see about that, won’t we ? »

Barry Hines, Unfinished Business.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively! PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THESE WORDS!
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

- (To) REPROACH – (to) ACHIEVE – BARRIER – ENTHUSIASM – PERPLEXED - ELDERLY – MEANWHILE – WHEREAS + un auxiliaire modal (exprimant une impossibilité).

Bon courage à toutes et à tous ... THE FORCE is with you!

Ex 132/ back to normal HERE4U le mercredi 30 mai, tard. FINISHED.

Hello my Dear Here4u and Maxwell ! Thank you both for your great exercises : I do love them!
Hi Everybody!

Here is my work:
I)Translate into English: FINISHED.
There is no point having fun with some «I would have to» and some «I could have to» and you feel responsible for everything. How far could he have gone if your mother hadn't taken charge?

A man shouldn't do his best, he should have to do his duty, without thinking about the upshot and repercussions of his actions.

I was more cunning than them and I gave them the slip ! Let that be a lesson to you, little boy!

It is in my best interests to follow my idea and I am ready for being caught off-guard. It may be the case that he 's going to hold me accountable about what was happened, won't he? No idea!

II) Translate into French: FINISHED.

Barry Hines, Unfinished Business.

Here is my translation:

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: FINISHED : this one was remaining.
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

Using THE 8 WORDS given below : the 2 verbs, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words.
- (To) REPROACH – (to) ACHIEVE – BARRIER – ENTHUSIASM – PERPLEXED - ELDERLY – MEANWHILE – WHEREAS + un auxiliaire modal (exprimant une impossibilité).

Here is it !
Anybody CAN NOT criticise about my English: as far as I show ENTHUSIAM to learn it, because when I met my friend in the flesh, I really felt the language
BARRIER between us : she has always REPROACHED me with my grammar mistakes; but before we become ELDERLY ladies, I hope to ACHIEVE this dream : MEANWHILE (since our meeting in 1983), I have worked a lot everyday, WHEREAS my friend, an English teacher, could have holidays... but didn't learn French... : I 'm not PERPLEXED : I will succeed..., but later! 91 words... (la date = 3 mots = nineteen-eighty-three)...

It's such a very long sentence...

Here4u ! I give the force back to you for marking.
See you soon !

A Human shouldn't do just WHAT HE CAN, he should do his duty, without thinking of consequences and impacts of his acts.

I must follow my idea and prepare myself not to be caught off guard. if that turns out, he's going to hold me accountable for what happened, right?"

- différent, peut-être, mais pas nécessairement meilleur.
- qu'est ce que tu veux dire ?

WHEREAS we Have No Other Choice, You should show more ENTHUSIASM rather being PERPLEXED in front of the necessity to put a BARRIER to avoid ELDERLY to ACHIEVE the lake 30; MEANWHILE, we can think of another solution, but don't REPROACH me what I do. 14 = 44

I remain PERPLEXED: why is there a BARRIER between the ELDERLY and the young? I CAN’T bear it ? they REPROACH them for Rejecting the new technologies, WHEAREAS they have ACHIEVED determinedly to use a mobile phone, and MEANWHILE communicate ENTHUSIASTICALLY with the outside world?( (45)

Bon week-end !

Good morning, dear here4u,
I beg to present you my work, ready to be corrected.

I)Translate into English:
It is useless playing with expression like "I should have" and "I could have" and hold yourself responsible for everything.. How far could he had gone if your mother hadn't taken things into her own hands?

A person shouldn’t only do his best but also do his duty, irrespective of the effects and repercussions of his deeds.
I have shown myself smarter than them and I have taken them for a ride! Learn the lesson, kid!
I’m interested in following my idea and I’m getting ready to not be caught unawares. If this were found I would be
requested to give account of what happened, wouldn’t I? “No idea”
II) Translate into French:
Phil picked up a beer can from the coffee table in front of the settee. The table took up most of the space and Lucy
usually kept it in a corner out of the way during the day-time. She had never cared for it, even though it had
come free with the three-piece suite, but Phil said that it finished off the room and he liked the motif of vintage
cars on the tiled surface.
« Our kids don’t know how lucky they are, he said, shaking the can to liven up the drop of beer inside and looking about the room with obvious satisfaction. « It’s a completely different world to what we were brought up in. »
« Different perhaps, but not necessarily better. »
« What do you mean ? »
« Well, when we grew up we could at least be sure of
getting a job. »
« We’ll have to wait and see about that, won’t we ? »
Barry Hines, Unfinished Business.

III) Playing and working with words:
- (To) REPROACH – (to) ACHIEVE – BARRIER – ENTHUSIASM – PERPLEXED - ELDERLY – MEANWHILE – WHEREAS + un auxiliaire modal (exprimant une impossibilité).

After ACHIEVING the victory of Ligny, Napoleon sent Grouchy to pursue the defeated ELDERLY Blücher, with the task to keep
him hindered from intervening in the decisive encounter with Wellington, planned near Waterloo, WHEREAS the PERPLEXED
Ney* failed to break-through the British BARRIER at Quatre-Bras ,43 being then REPROACHED by the Emperor, and IF in the MEANWHILE, HADN’T Grouchy’s sluggishness and lack of ENTHUSIASM** ALLOWED Blücher to join Wellington at Plancenoit, Napoleon MIGHT HAVE won at Waterloo.

Reference: Waterloo’s campaign, first and last phase.
* Marshal Ney suffered from occasional mental bewilderment, which arose during a battle. This lack of clearness of mind made him lose his nerves, acting in an impulsive way, inadmissible for a skilled and experienced leader like him, whose consequences were awful for the troops employed and could compromise the outcome of a battle.
It was the aftermath of the terrible stress he had faced during the last phase of Russian campaign of 1812, when he was appointed commander of the rearguard to cover the Grand Army retreat.
** Grouchy greatly underestimated the capacity of Blucher as a leader and carried on the chase of the Prussians without élan. Once arrived at Wavre, his old opponent’s army had already slipped away and was approaching Plancenoit.

I thank you very much for the nice exercise and remain,
hoping you have a great Sunday..

So long.

Hello Here4u,

I – Into English
1 – It’s no worth playing with «I should have» or «I could have», making yourself responsible for everything. How far could have he been had not your mother handled all the issues ?
2 – A man should not do his utmost, he should carry out his duty, without taking into account the consequences or the effects of his actions
3 – I proved I was smarter than them and I sneaked away ! Take a leaf of this book, sonny !
4 – I’ve better follow my idea and prepare myself not to be caught out of my guard. He could ask for an explanation about what happened, couldn’t he ? ‘No idea’

II – Into French
Phil picked up a beer can from the coffee table in front of the settee. The table took up most of the space and Lucy usually kept it in a corner out of the way during the day-time. She had never cared for it, even though it had come free with the three-piece suite, but Phil said that it finished off the room and he liked the motif of vintage cars on the tilted surface. «Our kids don’t know how lucky they are, he said, shaking the can to liven up the drop of beer inside and looking about th room with obvious satisfaction , it’s a completely different world to what we were brought up in. » «Different perhaps, but not necessarily better.» «What do you mean ? » «Well, when we grew up we could at least be sure of getting a job » «We’ll have to wait and see about that, won’t we ? »

III – Playing with words
WHEREAS the ELDERLY lady got to the BARRIER of the garden to ACHIEVE her plantations, she remained PERPLEXED and lost all her ENTHUSIASM at finding it closed, MEANWHILE the rain began to pour down, she COULDN’T help but REPROACHING the gardener for that! (40)

Thank you once more

Hello Here4u, hello all!

Here is my try. I wanted to post it earlier in the week, to allow you to correct it without being in the hurry. But when I worked on it again, I noticed that I had only done 2 sentences. So I finished this part today and I won't have time do to more until the dead line. Eevn if I had the intention to do more. Ready to be corrected, Here4u!

I)Translate into English:

I am interests to follow my plan and to be prepared not to be caugh off guard. Maybe, he will ask me to report about what happened, no? “No idea”.

Hello, Dearest Friends,

FINISHED

Hello everyone
Thanks a lot! This time, I'm starting with my favourite exercise : Playing with words. I took the liberty to exceed the 50-word "barrier" to make a more natural sentence, with more explanations!

III) Playing with words:
"As PERPLEXED as I was when you said you COULDN'T POSSIBLY visit your ELDERLY aunt WHEREAS I could, I agreed to go alone, without ENTHUSIASM, and so I did, but I've been told that MEANWHILE, you were on the beach, putting BARRIER cream on a blonde's back : I will not REPROACH you that darling, but what do you hope to ACHIEVE by doing that?" (68)

I) Translate into English:
"There's no use messing around with some 'I should have' or 'I could have' and blaming yourself for everything. How far could he have gone if your mother hadn't taken things in hand?"

"A man shouldn't only do his best, he should do his duty regardless of the consequences and the repercussions of his acts."

I outsmarted them and I've given them the slip! Let that be a lesson to you, little one!

I'm better off following my own advice(*) and getting ready to avoid being caught unprepared. I'll bet he's gonna ask for some explanations about what happened, isn't he?" "Your guess is as good as mine".
(*) or : my mind

Hello, Dear Friends!

Here is your correction!

I)Translate into English:

There’s no point in playing with « could-haves » and « should-haves » and put it all on yourself. How far do you think he could have gone if your mother hadn’t taken matters into her own hands?

- Ca ne sert à rien de = it’s no use + ing/ there’s no point in + ing/
- Rendre responsable de = to make someone responsible for/ (ici) take responsibility for/
- Prendre les choses en main = to take control/ to handle things/ take charge/ take things in hand/ take matters in hands/

A man shouldn’t do what he can, he should do what he must, regardless of the consequences or repercussions of his actions.

- Faire son possible = to do one’s utmost/ do one’s best/ do all in your power/ do everything you can/ do all you can/
- Son devoir = one’s duty/ what he must/
- « sans considérer » = consider/ take into account/ take into consideration/ regardless of/ with no regards for/ without any regards for/
- Les conséquences = result/ consequence/ outcome/
- Les répercussions = repercussions/ consequences/ the impact/

I ‘ve/ outsmarted them/ proved to be more cunning than they are and I’ve run out on him. Let that be a lesson for you, boy/ kid !

- Etre rusé = to be cunning/ crafty/ sly/ wily/
- Fausser compagnie = to give someone the slip/ to run out on someone/ to scarper/ skedaddle (colloquial)
- « Prends-en de la graine »= Let that be a lesson for you/ take a leaf out of my book/

I’d better stick to my idea and get ready not to be caught unawares. I could well/ have to answer for…/ be held accountable for/ what has happened.» «I have no clue!»

- follow someone’s idea/
- to catch unprepared/ catch unawares/ catch off-guard/
- it could be that/ it may be the case: maybe/ perhaps/ could be/
- il va me demander des comptes sur ce qui s'est passé = I could well have to answer for what has happened.»/ … be held accountable for/ to answer for it/ to account for/ to hold accountable/ to be held accountable for

Barry Hines, Unfinished Business.

(2) « had never cared for it » = ne l’avait jamais aimée

; « free », ici, = gratuitement/ gracieusement. Ils ne l’avaient pas payée.
Un canapé + 2 fauteuils = the three-piece suite

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
- (To) REPROACH – (to) ACHIEVE – BARRIER – ENTHUSIASM – PERPLEXED - ELDERLY – MEANWHILE – WHEREAS + un auxiliaire modal (exprimant une impossibilité).

- As soon as I get through the BARRIER of an hospice for the ELDERLY I feel a pang of anguish, I stay PERPLEXED as I hear the residents REPROACH the staff for the bad hygiene conditions ; I CAN'T help imagining how hard the work conditions of the staff are, besides the nurse can't ACHIEVE their duty for lack of means WHEREAS they are always keeping their ENTHUSIASM day after day ; MEANWHILE a lot of money is wasted in the country... (78)

- WHEREAS we have no other choice, you should show more ENTHUSIASM rather THAN be PERPLEXED in front of the necessity to put a BARRIER to stop the ELDERLY from reaching the lake; MEANWHILE, we can think of another solution, but don't REPROACH me for what I’m doing.(44)

- Nobody can criticise my English: as far as I show ENTHUSIAM to learn it, because when I met my friend in the flesh, I really felt the language BARRIER between us: she has always REPROACHED me with my grammar mistakes; but before we become ELDERLY ladies, I hope to fulfil this dream : MEANWHILE (since our meeting in 1983), I have worked a lot everyday, WHEREAS my friend, an English teacher, could have holidays... but didn't learn French... : I 'm not PERPLEXED : I will succeed..., but later! (91)

- WHEREAS the ELDERLY lady got to the BARRIER of the garden to ACHIEVE her plantations, she remained PERPLEXED and lost all her ENTHUSIASM at finding it closed, MEANWHILE the rain began to pour down, she COULDN’T help but REPROACHING the gardener for that! (40)

-I remain PERPLEXED: why is there a BARRIER between the ELDERLY and the young? I CAN’T bear it ? they REPROACH them for Rejecting the new technologies, WHEAREAS they have ACHIEVED determinedly to use a mobile phone, and MEANWHILE communicate ENTHUSIASTICALLY with the outside world?(45)

- When I posted my first draft with ENTHUSIASM to ACHIEVE the difficult enterprise of writing about the Great BARRIER Reef, I was REPROACHED for not complying with the rules and COULDN'T participate ; MEANWHILE I was PERPLEXED when this ELDERLY lady could take part WHEREAS she didn't respect them either. (49)

- After ACHIEVING the victory of Ligny, Napoleon sent Grouchy to pursue the defeated ELDERLY Blücher, with the task to keep
him hindered from intervening in the decisive encounter with Wellington, planned near Waterloo, WHEREAS the PERPLEXED Ney* failed to break-through the British BARRIER at Quatre-Bras, being then REPROACHED by the Emperor, and IF in the MEANWHILE, HADN’T Grouchy’s sluggishness and lack of ENTHUSIASM** ALLOWED Blücher to join Wellington at Plancenoit, Napoleon MIGHT HAVE won at Waterloo.

-"PERPLEXED as I was when you said you COULDN'T POSSIBLY visit your ELDERLY aunt WHEREAS I could, I agreed to go alone, without ENTHUSIASM, and so I did, but I've been told that MEANWHILE, you were on the beach, putting BARRIER cream on a blonde's back : I will not REPROACH you for that darling, but what do you hope to ACHIEVE by doing that?" (68)

Encore BRAVO à tous ! (et d'avoir travaillé avec ce groupe !) You're GREAT!
