Ex127/ frozen? not our brains
Message de here4u posté le 27-02-2018 à 12:08:36 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dears,

I)Translate into English:

Maxwell!

II) Translate into French : (a sequel to the preceding text)

I parted from my mother that day in a dream, so sudden and important was this new aspect of things to me. I was to learn Latin! Now that the humiliation of my failure at Bladesover was past for her, now that she had a little got over her first repugnance at this resort to my uncle and contrived something that seemed like a possible provision for my future, the tenderness natural to a parting far more significant than any of our previous partings crept into her manner.
She sat in the train to return, I remember, and I stood at the open door of her compartment, and neither of us knew how soon we should cease for ever to be a trouble to each other. « You must be a good boy, George, « she said. « You must learn… and you mustn’t set yourself up against those who are above you and better than you… Or envy them. »
« No, mother, » I said.
I promised carelessly. Her eyes were fixed upon me. I was wondering whether I could, by any means begin Latin that night…
H.G. WELLS, Tono-Bungay.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively! PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THESE WORDS!
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

(To) RAISE – (to) RESPECT – ELATED – EXTRAVAGANT – SWEATER – LAND - AT LEAST – HOWEVER + un superlatif irrégulier.

Let the FORCE be with YOU ! Correction en ligne le jeudi 15 mars 2018, tard! Enjoy!

Dear Here4U
I send you my try a little bit quickly, however ,I am afraid ,it will not be a masterpiece. Thank you for your correction.
Have a nice day.
READY TO BE CORRECTED

Dear, I know you think you can bear all the obstacles which the life will put on your way; however what is really important, that’s what you have decided to be prepared to bear

What is all this mess about this story ? A plan B about you : you would be my second choice, ? Why do you keep this stupid idea in mind? You keep on thinking of it and thinking again. It was in the heat of action I did not think of it. On the contrary, I know that in the heat action people let out what they really think

Luck smiled on him, he got his admission ticket for the quarter finals by a whisker.

I would like to toast Steve and I raise my glass to him who take over of the team./who is in the saddle of the team. We needed (undoubtedly/most certainly/indeed) somebody of his moral fibre to bring Mark's task to a successful conclusion who has departed so rapidly

VERSIO READY TO BE CORRECTED

.Ses yeux me fixaient.

(To) RAISE – (to) RESPECT – ELATED – EXTRAVAGANT – SWEATER – LAND - AT LEAST – HOWEVER + un superlatif irrégulier.

READY TO BE CORRECTED

For LAND’s sake you could RESPERCT me, by not RAISING your eyebrows when I tell you not putting on this EXTRAVAGANT skirt, HOWEVER don’t choose the worst among your SWEATERS, you know AT LEAST that will ELATE me ( Taiji 39)

Aussi peux-tu me permettre d'essayer autre chose?
My honey! I know that you believe have been through fire and rain(supporter tous les coups durs); however what is truly important in life that is what you have decided to get ready to afford . c'est trop loin du sujet non? mais c'est l'idée quand même ?
est-ce que celle-ci sera meilleure ?
My honey! I know you feel being able to bear any and all barriers that life got in store for you.

"It is the opposite,I know that under pressure the truth comes first.

He has been lucky as he was very close from not making it to the quater-finals.(ici j'ai essayé d'exprimer l'idée en faisant court, sans faire du mot à mot )mais pour traduire il s'en ai fallu d'un cheveu =it takes a strand of hair ou he came by a whisker)et la chance lui a souri =luck smiled on him or fortune has favoured him .

Now,I would like to propose a toast.I raise my glass to Steve who is ready to step up and lead again our team.It was necessary for us to have someone of its caliber to perform the work done by Marc who left us in a hurry.

III PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS

Parenting is not just to give the children the new fashionned SWEATER or a big LAND for running, it's AT LEAST TO RAISE children so they RESPECT everybody (even the EXTRAVAGANT persons): Parenthood is a difficult work but HOWEVER THE BEST job in life because with children we feel ELATED. H.G. WELLS, Tono-Bungay.

Here is mine:

! (Sinon, il aurait dit "mummy," "mum...")

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words.
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
(To) RAISE – (to) RESPECT – ELATED – EXTRAVAGANT – SWEATER – LAND - AT LEAST – HOWEVER + un superlatif irrégulier.

Here is my sentence:
He wears EXTRAVAGANT argill SWEATERS which makes me RAISE a smile; he RESPECTS neither the LAND nor his friends' house; HOWEVER we shared THE BEST time, ELATED but boring, he always RAISES a stink... AT LEAST, as a psychologist... : he's rough and ready ! 45 words.

GREAT, I love it !

(To) RAISE – (to) RESPECT – ELATED – EXTRAVAGANT – SWEATER – LAND - AT LEAST – HOWEVER + un superlatif irrégulier.
RESPECTING the Treaty of Bretigny of 1360, Sir John Hawkwood RAISED the "White Company" and moved to Italy, offering his services to THE MOST IMPORTANT rulers, everlastingly in conflict, for EXTRAVAGANT hires and LAND donations, well deserved thanks to his military skill and HOWEVER considered AT LEAST a SWEATER, his men were ELATED of being led by him. 58

Reference: Hundred Years War, first phase. After the Treaty of Bretigny John Hawkwood became “jobless”, like of the most English knights, longbow-men and
men at arms, but instead of turn back to England or dedicating to the border guerrilla who harassed France in this period, he joined and then became captain of a free company called The White Company from the white surcoat bearing a red cross, that its men had to wear and moved to Italy.
Since it was difficult to pronounce his name, he was given an Italian byname: Giovanni Acuto, with which he’s still nowadays known in Italy, where
he died in 1394 as an honorary Florentine citizen, respected and well-to do.

Thanks a lot for the fine exercise.
I hope you have a great Sunday, dear friend.
So long.

FINISHED
Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot for your wonderful exercises: I'll never get enough of them.
I hope I didn't make too many false senses while translating into French... We'll see...

I)Translate into English:

My dear! I know you think you can stand all the obstacles that life will put in your path ; but what really matters is what YOU have decided to be willing to bear...

"What is this (all) about? A plan B about you : you would be my second choice? Why are you keeping that foolish idea in mind? You can't help thinking about it over and over again... It was said in the heat of the moment. I didn't mean it...."
"On the contrary, I know that in the heat of the moment, people let slip what they really think..."

Lady luck has smiled on him: he came within a whisker of moving into the quarter finals.

Now, I would like to give a toast. I drink to Steve who takes over the reins of the team. We certainly needed somebody of his caliber to carry out Mark's work who has left us so suddenly.

III) Playing with words :
HOWEVER foolish and EXTRAVAGANT his LAND project may have appeared, he quickly RAISED funds totalling AT LEAST 10 million dollars, so I was ELATED when this MOST successful businessman in the world, whom I've always RESPECTED despite his ugly SWEATER, told me he would take me on. (48)

Hello Here4u
That's my first participation... Could you be indulgent with me !! lol! sleep tight!

I- Translate into English:

1-My dear! I know that you think you can accept all this obstacles that life will put on your way; but what is really important is what you have decided to be ready to support by yourself.

2-"what is this story about.A B plan about yourself: you will be my second choice. Why do you keep this stupid idea on mind? You never stop thinking about it and thinking about it still. It was saying in the heat of the moment.
I didn't really think that.
Against , I know that in the heat of the moment, people let themself escape what they really think.

3-Maxwell says : Luck smiled on his: he doesn't get his entry's ticket into the quater-finals by a whisker.

4-Maxwell says: I would like now to suggest a toast. I raise a glass to Steeve whom took the reins of the team over. It certainly shalled us, somebody with this temper, to lead Mark's work, who left us hurriedly.

III-Playing and working with words:

Because of his depression (he didn't see his BEST friend for few weeks) she RESPECTED his EXTRAVAGANT decision and AT LEAST hoped to RAISE his malaise by sending him SWEATER of the LAND wich HOWEVER drive him ELATED;

Hello, Dearest Friends,

L’exercice « Rack your Brains 17 » était difficile de manière visible.

I)Translate into English:

Dear! I know you’re thinking you can take on anything that life is throwing at you; but what really matters is what you’ve decided you’re ready to take on.

- Supporter quelque chose = to tolerate something/ accept/ bear/ stand/ cope with/ handle/ take (on)
- Tout ce que = all that/ anything that/
- la vie = nom abstrait sans article défini = "Life" = La vie en général ; mais vous la déterminerez (en utilisant « the », une « vie particulière » = la vie qu’il mène = the life he’s living.
- mettre sur ton chemin = ici être un obstacle= stand in someone’s way.
- être prêt à supporter : to be willing to bear/ ready to take/

What’s all that about? That plan B thing about you? You’d be my second best? Why are you going round and round about it? It was a heat of the moment thing, I didn’t mean it. » « That’s just the opposite! I know that in the heat of the moment, people blurt out what they really mean.»

- second choix : second best/ second rate/
- « dans le feu de l’action » : in the heat of the action/ in the heat of the moment/
- laisser échapper = blurt out/ let slip/ let out/
Sinon = I didn’t mean it.
- « au contraire » = on the contrary/ that’s the opposite/

Fortune has smiled on him. He was within a hair’s breadth of qualifying for the quarter finals.

- La chance lui a souri : fortune favoured [the brave] / him // he who dares wins/ fortune smiled on him/
- décrocher quelque chose : décrocher (le gros lot)= to be on the gravy lane (familier)/ win/

Now, I’d like to propose a toast/ give a toast. Let’s drink to Steve who’s taking control of the team. We definitely needed someone up to his standards/ to his level/ of his calibre/ to carry out the work of Mark who has left us so abruptly…

- Porter un toast = To toast/ to raise a glass to/ to propose a toast to/
- Lever son verre : raise a glass to/ drink to/ "here's to you ..."
- Reprendre les rênes = Take up the rains/ take control/

II) Translate into French: Sorry for the great difficulty…
I parted from my mother that day in a dream, so sudden and important was this new aspect of things to me. I was to learn Latin! Now that the humiliation of my failure at Bladesover was past for her, now that she had a little got over her first repugnance at this resort to my uncle and contrived something that seemed like a possible provision for my future, the tenderness natural to a parting far more significant than any of our previous partings crept into her manner.
She sat in the train to return, I remember, and I stood at the open door of her compartment, and neither of us knew how soon we should cease for ever to be a trouble to each other. «You must be a good boy, George," she said. « You must learn… and you mustn’t set yourself up against those who are above you and better than you… Or envy them. »
« No, mother,» I said.
I promised carelessly. Her eyes were fixed upon me. I was wondering whether I could, by any means begin Latin that night.
H.G. WELLS, Tono-Bungay.

«to sit, I sat, sat»= être assis, rester assis, par opposition à «to sit down» = l’action de s’assoir.

III) (To) RAISE – (to) RESPECT – ELATED – EXTRAVAGANT – SWEATER – LAND - AT LEAST – HOWEVER + un superlatif irrégulier.
EXTRAVAGANT = était notre FAUX-AMI ... Lien internet
- Lien internet
. Beaucoup ne l’ont pas vu …

- For LAND’s sake you could RESPECT me, by not RAISING your eyebrows when I tell you not to put on this EXTRAVAGANT(NO !) skirt, HOWEVER don’t choose the worst among your SWEATERS, you know AT LEAST that will ELATE me. ( 39)

- HOWEVER foolish and EXTRAVAGANT his LAND project may appear, he quickly RAISED funds totalling, AT LEAST 10 million dollars, so I was ELATED when this MOST successful businessman in the world, whom I had always RESPECTED despite his ugly SWEATER, told me he would take me on. (47)

- THE ELDEST of the family said that on this LAND, it was EXTRAVAGANT to RAISE this poultry without RESPECTING the traditional method, HOWEVER his brother, who is wearing the red SWEATER, was ELATED because his harvest was AT LEAST twice as big as his neighbours’. (44)

- To be able to RAISE the huge rock which had fallen on his LAND, Peter, AT LEAST, had had to remove his hot SWEATER, and then completely ELATED in front of his people, with an EXTRAVAGANT(NO!) gesture and shouting, he lifted the rock; RESPECT Sir, (HOWEVER = whatever can be said, YOU ARE THE BEST. 54

- HOWEVER surprising it may seem, he was wearing this EXTRAVAGANT (NO!) shabby SWEATER and still felt ELATED, when AT LAST it was his turn TO RAISE the flag, since he deeply RESPECTED both his host country and the LAND of his fathers. (40)

- Because of his depression, he hadn't seen his BEST friend for weeks, she RESPECTED his EXTRAVAGANT (??) decision and AT LEAST hoped to RAISE his enthusiasm by sending him a SWEATER of the LAND which, HOWEVER made him ELATED;

- The ELATED men RAISED their eyebrows when they saw the EXTRAVAGANT (NO!) girl with her tight SWEATER, her feet hardly skimming the LAND but, HOWEVER great the temptation they RESPECTED her, AT LEAST for the moment; may THE BEST win!(39)

- Parenting is not just giving your children the new trendy SWEATER or a big LAND to run, it's AT LEAST RAISING children so that they RESPECT everybody (even the EXTRAVAGANT (NO!) persons): Parenthood is a difficult work but HOWEVER THE BEST job in life because, with children, we feel ELATED. (50)

- RESPECTING the Treaty of Bretigny of 1360, Sir John Hawkwood RAISED the "White Company" and moved to Italy, offering his services to THE MOST IMPORTANT rulers, everlastingly in conflict, for EXTRAVAGANT hires and LAND donations, well deserved thanks to his military skill and HOWEVER considered AT LEAST a SWEATER, his men were ELATED of being led by him. 58

Reference: Hundred Year War, first phase. After the Treaty of Bretigny John Hawkwood became “jobless”, like most English knights, longbow-men and men at arms, but instead of turning back to England or dedicating to the border guerrilla who harassed France at that time, he joined and then became captain of a free company called The White Company from the white surcoat bearing a red cross, that the men were wearing and moved to Italy.
Since it was difficult to pronounce his name, he was given an Italian alias: Giovanni Acuto, with which he’s still known in Italy nowadays; he'll die there in 1394 as an honorary Florentine citizen, respected and well-to do.

- He wears EXTRAVAGANT argyle SWEATERS, which makes me RAISE a brow; he RESPECTS neither the LAND nor his friends' house; HOWEVER we shared THE BEST time, ELATED but boring, he always RAISES a stink... AT LEAST, as a psychologist...: he's rough and ready! (45)

Encore BRAVO à tous ...
