Message de here4u posté le 28-09-2017 à 22:03:04 (S | E | F)
Hello Dear Friends!
Cet exercice 117 est bien un et la correction sera en ligne le dimanche 15 octobre tard ;

I)Translate into English:
Maxwell !

II) a) Translate into French:
The first Saturday after New Year we went to Tesco’s as usual but when we got to the meat section he bought a bloody great joint. «What’s going on?» I wanted to know. «We’ve just got through eating all that turkey.»
«Ah!» he said, «We’ve got company for lunch tomorrow.»
«Who?» But all he’d say was «Just a friend».
Well I knew most of his mates and there was nothing special about any of them. I got really mad but he wouldn’t tell.
Andrea Lascelles. The Best Mate

b) In 100 words max. Imagine who the friend will be... (an extra share of FORCE!)

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (To) ATTRACT – to RECEIVE – SELFLESS – AMAZING - a CATCH - a WOUND – EVENTUALLY – UNLIKE + l’ inversion d’un sujet

IV) Student in Danger! SOS, student in need… is Number one on another thread of the site : « Help! and Rack your brains 6 ». Please, RUSH to help my poor Student… He needs it and has another very demanding exercise for you...

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

Hello Here4u and all hardworkers , here is my work OK FOR CORRECTION

)Translate into English:
Corporate espionage? It seems it's a little exaggerated ... Let's just say a disclosure, a slip of the tongue turned into a rumour ... "" The fact is that there is a disclosure and that we must put an end in it. "

Don't you think you're trying to take revenge for Ben's betrayal? Don't get on your high horse and don't forget that retaliation has a cost ... "

"She is more than adorable ... You know, little girl, sometimes, "older children " make mistakes ... and the more you will grow, the more you will understand that adults are not perfect

He pushed open the door, provoking the employee a dreadful fear , then forced the safe from which he grabbed the contents before escaping. He remained speechless when he discovered the contents of the bags at home

I hope that it does not surprise you too much but I was led to delete this sentence which is questionable.

b) In 100 words max. Imagine who the friend will be...
I had never seen this guy before he come at home that next morning . My father introduced him to me and said they both worked together at the brewery . The first time I saw him I was impressed as he was very much taller than me and talkative , moreover I become a little suspicious when I noticed a big tatoo on his left arm . I thought he wanted I become a good friend to him , He was generous since he didn't hesitate to buy some food like a turkey ,he only wanted to share a delicious meal with us .....98 words

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
- (To) ATTRACT ? to RECEIVE ? SELFLESS ? AMAZING - a CATCH - a WOUND ? EVENTUALLY ? UNLIKE l' inversion d'un sujet
NOT ONLY does the wrestler ATTRACK applauses of the spectators by making AMAZING gestures BUT he ALSO RECEIVES the congratulations from the SELFLESS president of the jury ,UNLIKE his competing rival who EVENTUALLY falls on the ring after a CATCH which causes him a painful WOUND in his shoulder. 49 words.
Dear Here4u , despite of many imperfections in my work I have decided to post it .

I send to Taiji all my best thoughts

hello dear friends
this is my try, dear HERE4U, ready to be corrected.

I)Translate into English:
"Industrial espionage?" That seems a little exaggerated ... Let's say rather a leak, a slip of the tongue turned into a rumor ... The fact is that there is a leak and (that) we must put an end to it.

"Don't you think you are trying to revenge yourself from Ben's betrayal ? Don't get on your high horse and don't forget that reprisals have a price..."

She is more than adorable....
- you know, little girl, sometimes, adults make mistakes.... and the more you grow up, the more you understand that adults are not perfect.

He knocked the door down, terrifying a lot the employee, then he forced the strong-box from which he robbed the content before running away. He stayed speechless discovering at home, what there is inside the bags.

I hope You will not be too surprised, but I have had to remove this sentence which is doubtful.

Andrea Lascelles. The Best Mate

b) In 100 words max. Imagine who the friend will be... - I have liked this possibility to continue a story...
During the night, I thought about " just a friend"; a woman, of course, a new partner, someone who takes all her time in the bathroom, when I want to go there ! 31
I began to feel mad, once again, he would go to spend time and money for a woman, a loose woman, may be ! 23 my anger increased in front of his weakness with women...... I was not ready to accept anybody in MY house..... 43
The day after, I saw an old man ringing at the door, and immediately I recognized him, he was my grand-father I have not seen from years....27

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
UNLIKE YOU, I was SELFLESS on this subject, and reading his book, I found it AMAZINg,16 it ATTRACTS me a lot to know more, so, even if you RECEIVE a WOUND reading it, 33 You will learn about the CATCH you are living, and EVENTUALLY, you could come out of it. 50

A catch : embrouille, entourloupe.
Thank you Maxwell, Thanks a lot here4u, for this new interesting exercise.

Ready to be corrected: THE FIVE SENTENCES AND THE TRANSLATION

She is more than sweet…You know, little girl, sometimes the not- so- young are mistaken… and the older you will grow up the more conscious you will understand more and more that adults are not perfect.

He broke open the door, making to the employee a dreadful fear; then forced the safe of which he seizes the content before running away. He was flabbergasted discovering the bag contents at his home.

I hop that doesn’t surprise you too much, therefore I was led to delete this sentence that is open to question

«Who?» But all he’d say was «Just a friend».
Well I knew most of his mates and there was nothing special about any of them. I got really mad but he wouldn’t tell.
Andrea Lascelles.

READY TO BE CORRECTED SORRY I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CORRECTTHE IDIOMATIC SENTENCES
THANK YOU SO MUCH I AM THINKING OF ALL OF YOU Above all on Wednesday

When you move IN with SOMEBODY ELSE there are little thinks THAT will ALWAYS be TRUE. One of THEM is THAT :
One OF THE TWO PERSON will ALWAYS be CLEANER THAN THE OTHER . There’s A GOOD CHANCE THAT SOMETHING you know in your HEART is not THAT big of a deal AND BECOMES SOMETHING that MAKES your BLOOD boiling. So you will explain TO your flat mates that the DISHES are STILL in the sink SINCE LAST WEDNESDAY and THAT you have TO FOLD your OWN ROOMY cloths in order to WASH YOURS. BESIDES, this PESKY lamp was STILL LEFT PLUGGED IN for two HUNDRED MILLION times. So when you’ll be SAYING THAT let’s stop. It’s NO WORST COMPLAINING. Why SPEND so MUCH energy FOR nothing. HIREA cleaner on the budget , ADD it ON the rent and GIVE IT to the tenant. So when you’re doing THAT , let’s stop. It’s not worth complaining. and DISPLAYING a BANNER saying : « what liberty is for the pick deaf is for the MINOR ! » or « My SWING LEFT IS my first end where his nose BEGINS ».

Hello Here4u,

I – Into English
1 – Industrial espionage ? That seems a bit too much… Let’s say maybe a leak, a slip of the tongue turned into a rumour..The fact is that there has been a leak and we must put an end to that
2 – Don’t you think you are trying to take revenge on Ben’s betrayal ? Don’t get on your high horse and don’t forget that reprisals could cost you a lot
3 – She’s more than adorable.. You know, little girl, the grown-ups make mistakes.. and the more you grow the better you will understand that adults are not perfect
4 – He broke the door open, causing the clerk a terrible fear then forced the safe which contents he grabbed before running away. When at his place, he was flabbergasted when he discovered what was inside the bags !
5 – I hope you are not too much surprised but I had to delete this sentence, a bit controversial

II – Into French
The first Saturday after New Year, we went to Tesco’s as usual but when we got to the meat section he brought a bloody great joint. “What’s going on ?” I wanted to know. “We’ve just got through eating all that turkey” “Ah ! he said “We’ve got company for lunch tomorrow” “Who ?” But all he’d say was “Just a friend”. Well I knew most of his mates and there was nothing special about any of them. I got really mad but he wouldn’t tell.

B – Oh, Gosh it IS a woman, for sure. Actually I found him a bit funny those last weeks, more excited, with a strange sickly smell around him, kind of patchouli.. and that drives me crazy. I don’t want another woman at home. We’re happy now, my dad and I. I love him, he loves me and we don’t need a female between us : ‘don’t do this, don’t do that’ she’ll sure try to run my life and I don’t want that I don’t need anyone giving me orders (86)

III –
He was a good CATCH this rich AMAZING man and, though SELFLESS, she was ATTRACTED by him ; so EVENTUALLY, the WOUND was deep when she RECEIVED the split letter that was so UNLIKE him, could you imagine that ?(37)

Difficult this one wasn't it !
Have a nice Sunday evening..

Industrial espionage ? It seems a little exaggerated to me…. let's say rather a leak, a slip of the tongue turned in a rumor...the point is that there is a leak and we must put an end to it...

The person I was introduced to me the next morning by my father was stout and had ruddy cheeks. The duvet he wore made him/her looks a bit like the Michelin’s advertising poster, but he was very kind and a merry guy, too. He brought a chocolate cake and a bottle of sparkling wine for dessert. It was the first time I saw him but I had no shyness to him, ‘cause he entertained me with amusing stories of events happened to him and my father in the brewery, before and during the delicious lunch that we enjoyed very much. 98 **

** I hope I was able enough to identify myself with the young girl and her language level, too, in accordance with your directions, even though I’ve had no experience in merit so far.

Hello Dear Here4u, and Maxwell !
Hi Everybody !

Here is my work:
I)Translate into English:
« About industrial espionage ? It looks excessive to me... Say or more accurentely a leak, a Freudian slip transformed it into a rumour... » « The fact is there 's been a leak and we have to put an end to. »

Don't you think you are trying to take vengeance on Ben's betrayal ? Don't get on your high horse and don't forget that reprisal have a price.

« She is so cute... You know, little girl, sometimes, adultes make mistakes... and the more you'll grow up, you 'll understand more and more that adults are not perfect. »

He knocked the door, inducing a dreadful fear to the employee, overdid on the safe, when he took possession of its contents before fleeing. He gawped discovering at home the contents of his bags.

Maxwell !
I wish you are not much surprised but I was led to delete that sentence which is taken with a pinch of salt.

The first Saturday after New Year we went to Tesco’s as usual but when we got to the meat section he bought a bloody great joint. «What’s going on?» I wanted to know. «We’ve just got through eating all that turkey.»

Well I knew most of his mates and there was nothing special about any of them. I got really mad but he wouldn’t tell.
Andrea Lascelles. « The Best Mate »

My translation is :
Andrea Lascelles «  Le meilleur pote ».

b) In 100 words max. Imagine who the friend will be...
If Andrea's father is so enigmatic, the best friend could be a lady... perhaps his anciant wife, the mother of his girl Andrea ? Or perhaps his daugher 's best friend ? As he wants to put on the great spread, for their next lunch, the best mate must be very a special and he wants to impress her... or him ! ??? And if he was his father so I want to say Andrea's grandfather  or grandmother or anyone else of their family? We can imagine anyone, important enough to throw their habit, and spend much money for a lunch... 99 words.

(To) ATTRACT – to RECEIVE – SELFLESS – AMAZING - a CATCH - a WOUND – EVENTUALLY – UNLIKE + l’ inversion d’un sujet
Here is my sentence : it takes me a very long time, and I DO hope you won't be disappointed... !
Jordan's behaviour is SELFLESS and AMAZING : he is ATTRACTED by Helen who fell into a trap, she RECEIVED a bad CATCH ; as she had a nosebleed, she went to the hospital... EVENTUALLY she went out the following day, UNLIKE DID JORDAN who RECEIVED a fatal WOUND ! 47 words.
My translation, if it's not clear for understanding :

V) Time to help my poor students in need: please HELP… will you?
Your mission, and I know you love it , will be to CORRECT as many mistakes as you can. PLEASE, WRITE THE CORRECTED WORDS or sentences IN CAPITALS…(Colours are lost in transfers.) Add punctuation if necessary.
When you move with anyone there are little thinks who will be always truth. One of theirs is these :
One people will be always more clean that an another. There’s chances than some thing you know in your hearth is not than big of a deal become some thing that make your bloud boiling. So you will explain your flat mates that the dishs of last wenesday are in still the sink and than you must have folded your roomies’s cloths in order to washing yours own. Beside, this pesk lamp was again left on for two hundreds millions times. So when you’ll be doing this, let’s stop. It’s not worse to complain. Why spending so energyfour nothing. Hyring cleaner on the budget and adding it to the rent gave to the tenant. So when you’re doing this, let’s stop. It’s not worth complaining.and displaid a baner saying : « what liberty is for the pick deaf is for the minou ! » or « My left to swing my first end where his nose begin ».

Here is my marking, but I 'm NOT a teacher!
When you move with SOMEONE there are FEW THINGS WHICH ARE always TRUE. One of THEM is THAT ONE : ANYONE WILL ALWAYS BE CLEANER THAN ANOTHER ONE. There ARE chances SO THAT SOMETHING you know in your heart is not AS big AS a deal and BECOMES SOMETHING that MAKES your BLOOD boiling. So you will explain TO your flat mates that the DISHES of THE LATEST WEDNESDAY ARE STILL IN the sink, and THAT you must have folded your ROOMY'S CLOTHES in order to WASH your own. BESIDES THAT PESKY lamp was STILL SWITCHED on for two HUNDRED MILLIONS OF times. So when you are going that, JUST stop. It's NO worth COMPLAINING. Why do you spend so ENERGY FOR nothing? Hiring a cleaner on the budget and adding it FOR RENTING GIVE to the FOLLOWERS. So when you are doing that, JUST stop IT! It's no worth complaining and DISPLAYING a banner saying : « What liberty is for picking death for the MINNOW ! » or «  MY left SWINGS my first end where his nose BEGINS. »

My best thoughts and regards to Taiji...
Thank you so much to Here4u and Maxwell for your new exercises...

FINISHED
Hello dear all
And thanks a lot Here4U Here's my try:

I)Translate into English:
"Industrial espionage ? It strikes me as a little excessive... Rather (*) a leak, a slip turned into a rumour" "The fact is, there's a leak and we must put an end to it"
(*) or : Let's rather say

Don't you think you're trying to take revenge for Ben's betrayal? Don't get on your high horse and don't forget retaliation is costly

She's as sweet as can be... You know, little girl, sometimes grown-ups can make mistakes... and the older you'll get, the more you'll understand that adults are not perfect(*).

He flung the door open forcefully (*), frightening the employee out of his wits, then pried the safe open, whose contents he seized before leaving. His mouth dropped open finding out the contents of the bags at his place.
(*) je n'ai pas mis : He broke the door down , car ça signifie "défoncer la porte", ce qui n'est pas tout à fait pareil...
I hope it doesn't come as too much of a surprise (*), but I had to remove this questionable sentence (**).
(*) au début j'avais pensé ajouter "to you", mais ça me semble superflu
(**) j'ai évité de mettre : "remove this sentence which is questionable", sinon, on pourrait penser que c'est le fait de supprimer la phrase qui est discutable

II) a) Translate into French:
The first Saturday after New Year we went to Tesco’s as usual but when we got to the meat section he bought a bloody great joint. «What’s going on?» I wanted to know. «We’ve just got through eating all that turkey.»

b) In 100 words max. Imagine who the friend will be...
(an extra share of FORCE!)

The next morning, I saw my dad dressed, shaved and perfumed as ever. "Boy, he or she must be something special!" "She is!" Then I knew it was a woman. At noon, someone rang at the door. It was a good-looking middle aged woman. She was polite, kind, and even funny. And above all, she treated me like a young woman. She talked to me as if I were her mate. When I learnt my dad had a crush on her and that she was our new social worker, I knew life would be wonderful from now on. (99)

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

UNLIKE my husband, this AMAZING man is quite a CATCH : his taking care of a WOUND on a stranger's body on the street first ATTRACTED my attention ; WERE I single, maybe I would have invited, RECEIVED and... EVENTUALLY married my SELFLESS hero ! (43)

Hello, dearest Friends, and hard-workers,

Faithful workers, here is your correction! Once again, you've given me your very best work and I really thank you for it! Please, accept my congratulations!

Please, forgive me for swamping you with work... If I tend to do it again, please, protest...

I)Translate into English:

« Corporate espionage » sounds far-fetched to me… Let’s say, rather a slip of the tongue turned into a rumor ». « The fact is there’s a leak and we’ve got to stop it ».

- Let’s say this was much more likely a slip/ let’s say a slip… / it was rather a slip (to slip= glisser)…
- un lapsus= a slip/ a slip of the tongue (ça, mes élèves adorent ! )/ a Freudian slip (don't forget the capital F)/ a verbal slip up/ an involuntary disclosure/
- transformer en = to turn into something

« Don’t you think you’re trying to get back at Ben for his betrayal. Don’t get on your high horse and don’t forget that retaliation comes at a cost."

- Se venger de = to avenge something= avenge a murder/ avenge somebody for something/ to have revenge on somebody/ retaliate for something/ have your revenge/ get your own back for something/ pay someone for/ take revenge on/ get back at someone for/ get even with B for (donne l’idée d’une « manche » gagnée…)
- get off your high horse/ don’t get on your high horse/ don’t be huffy about / don’t be uppity about /
- les représailles = reprisal/ retaliation/
- avoir un coût = to cost/ to come at a cost/

She’s beyond adorable! You know, little girl, sometimes grown-ups do make mistakes… The older you grow, the more you’ll understand that adults are not perfect!

- Elle est plus qu'adorable != more than adorable/ beyond adorable/

He broke the door open, frightening the employee out of his wits; then, he cracked open the safe, whose contents he grabbed before running away. He stood speechless when, reaching home, he discovered what was in the bags.

- enfoncer la porte = knock down/ break down/ stave in/
Lien internet

"défoncer" is stronger than "enfoncer". You can "enfoncer" without breaking it, while "défoncer" is not far from putting it into pieces"
- " faisant une peur épouvantable à l'employé " = frightening the employee out of his wits/ (encore une fois, merci l’auteur !) scaring the assistant dreadfully/ terribly scaring.../ frightening ; « afraid » m’a semblé trop faible.
- " puis força le coffre-fort " = « pried the safe open » (merci maxwell !) En plus, une résultative ! Je ne pouvais pas mieux rêver ! / broke open/ crack a safe/
- Il resta bouche bée = he stood speechless/ gaping/ amazed/ gobsmacked/ dumbstruck/ dumbfounded/ flabbergasted/ open-mouthed/ gawping/ gawking (Lien internet

I do hope you won’t be too surprised but I’ve decided to delete that sentence which I found questionable...

-Etre amené à = to be led to/ to be made to do (impliquent tous deux des contraintes, alors que la décision finale avec " amené à " (cf le TLF et le gros Robert) ne dépend pas forcément d’une obligation venue de l’extérieur, mais peut venir du raisonnement de la personne, et de la décision dépendant d’un libre choix, après réflexion.
- sujette à caution = was to be taken with a pinch of salt/ be subject to caution/ was doubtful/ could be misinterpreted/ questionable.

II) Translate into French:
« The first Saturday after New Year we went to Tesco’s as usual but when we got to the meat section he bought a bloody great joint. «What’s going on?» I wanted to know. «We’ve just got through eating all that turkey.»
«Ah!» he said, «We’ve got company for lunch tomorrow.»
« Who ? » But all he’d say was « Just a friend ».
Well I knew most of his mates and there was nothing special about any of them. I got really mad but he wouldn’t tell. »

Andrea Lascelles. The Best Mate

(3) Just a friend !

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
(To) ATTRACT – to RECEIVE – SELFLESS – AMAZING - a CATCH - a WOUND – EVENTUALLY – UNLIKE + l’inversion d’un sujet
Lien internet

- UNLIKE my husband, this AMAZING man is quite a CATCH: his taking care of a WOUND on a stranger's body on the street, first ATTRACTED my attention; HAD I BEEN single, maybe I would have invited, RECEIVED and... EVENTUALLY married my SELFLESS hero! (43)

- NOT ONLY does the wrestler ATTRACT the applause of the spectators by making AMAZING gestures BUT he ALSO RECEIVES the congratulations of the SELFLESS president of the jury, UNLIKE his competing rival who EVENTUALLY falls on the ring after a CATCH which causes him a painful WOUND in his shoulder. 49

- UNLIKE you, I was SELFLESS on this subject, and reading his book, I found it AMAZING, it ATTRACTED me a lot to know more, so, even if you RECEIVED a WOUND reading it, you will learn about the CATCH you are living, and EVENTUALLY, you could come out of it. 50

- Waiting for a CATCH, Paul and Johanna were talking; Paul was ATTRACTED to Johanna; UNLIKE for him in her eyes a ray of hope is shining; her WOUNDED heart was wary; SELFLESS, Paul would like to RECEIVE her love without fear; they could live an AMAZING affair EVENTUALLY...

- This rich AMAZING man was a good CATCH and, though SELFLESS, she was ATTRACTED to him; EVENTUALLY, the WOUND was deep when she RECEIVED the «dear John»-letter (= lettre de rupture) that was so UNLIKE him; could you imagine that?(37)

- “Not until dawn DID THE SENTINELS realize that the Achaei had left, leaving an AMAZING, gigantic wooden horse, which made the Trojans believe, they EVENTUALLY had renounced to avenge a WOUND Paris had inflicted on them; they were so ATTRACTED by the artefact, to demolish a part of the city’s gate in order to RECEIVE it within, despite the selfless OPINION of Cassandra who UNLIKE them, believed the horse was a CATCH. 72

- Jordan's behaviour is SELFLESS and AMAZING : he is ATTRACTED to Helen who fell into a trap; she RECEIVED a bad CATCH; as she had a nosebleed, she went to the hospital; EVENTUALLY she went out the following day, UNLIKE JORDAN who RECEIVED a fatal WOUND! 47 (obligée d’enlever l’inversion du sujet mal construite )
