Hello, Dear Friends!

Vaillants travailleurs de tous moments ! Bravo !

THE FORCE.

As one always does, we thought of ourselves as immortal, so Sam’s coronary at the age of fifty-two came like a bolt from the blue. With doctors warning of another one being imminent if he didn’t change a lifestyle which involved too much travelling, too much entertaining of clients and too little exercise, we returned to England in the summer of ’99 with no employment and a couple of boys in their late teens who had never seen their homeland.
England had changed[…] during the time we’d been abroad, strikes were almost unknown, the pace of life had quickened dramatically and there was a new widespread affluence that hadn’t existed in the 70s. We couldn’t believe how expensive everything was, how crowded the roads were, how difficult it was to find a parking space now that « shopping » had become the Brits’ favourite pastime.

III. PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- DIAMOND – SHADE - CRIMSON - HEAVY - (to) BORROW - (to) BURY – UNLESS – THEREFORE + MUST employé à n’importe quel temps.

IV) Student in Danger! SOS, student in need… « Holiday… » is Number one on another thread of the site (« Rack your brains 2 ». Please, RUSH to help my poor Student… He needs it.

THE FORCE IS WITH YOU!!!

Hello everyone
Thanks a lot Here4U . Should there be pitfalls, I'm sure I've fallen into them as I've seen none of them ... including mine

I) Translate into English:

Only you here has what it takes to handle things alone... Your friends still have to learn it and believe me, I'll teach them.

According to what he says, the universal golden rule states that nothing and no one is evil on purpose. In fact, he must be right since every cloud has a silver lining. I've often been there... (*)
(*) or : I've often experienced it.

You didn't trust him and were quite right (not to do so). Watch your back and take care of yourself. Keep an eye on both of them. They're both hard, one by experience, the other one by nature. If they feel that you've done something wrong, you'll have to play it safe.

That said, it's rather logical : by progressing haphazardly, by risking everything on a gamble, he was heading straight for disaster : things couldn't work out.

5. - Oh !
Oh! You seem to be out of sorts, don't you? (*) - Right, it hasn't been a completely relaxing day... I prefer to skip dinner as I feel I'll soon be in the arms of Morpheus.

III. PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

MUST I remind you that UNLESS you give me back the HEAVY cut DIAMOND you BORROWED from me, my bullet will paint your face red with a SHADE of CRIMSON tones ; THEREFORE, are you still BURYING your head in the sand ? (41)

III) Playing and working with words:
I had finally made it, the perfect diamond; though I had to borrow my master’s secret books, and eventually bury once and for all my own imperfections, now I could finally see its unusual shape through its distant shade, magnified by the crimson sparkle of its reflection, with my own eyes:
oddly enough, its sound would make it seem like it had to be somewhat heavy, but it was not, unless carried by the sole tip of a finger, therefore I must have come to the conclusion that:
“what remains silent may hide deeper secrets and treasures, do not allow your ears to dictate what your eyes may see”.

THEREFORE, to appear more beautiful, She found nothing better than BORROWING a CRIMSON and HEAVY pure DIAMOND to BURY her hen party ; UNLESS being completely stupid, we understood that we HAD TO be discrete rather than putting her in the SHADE ! 41

Thanks for the cheers here4u! Glad to be back!
I really enjoy making an attempt at translating your sentences which all raise, in their own way, difficulties I wouldn't have to deal with in "traduction technique" ou "traduction spécialisée" exercises.
Truly though, I really like to work by night, it grants me some extra creativity and a better perception overall.
It doesn't always come in handy when you also have to work by day, but hey! To each his own.
Have a good night guys.

Hello Here4u,

I – Into English

1 –You are the only one here who has got all that’s necessary to cope on your own.. Your friends must still learn that and believe me I’ll teach them
2 – According to what he says, the golden rule of the Universe says that nothing or nobody really means to be nasty. Actually, he must be right since every cloud has a silver lining.. I’ve often checked it
3 – You did not trust him and you were right. Protect your rear and take care. Keep an eye on both of them, they are relentless, the first one by practice, the other on by nature. If they think you’ve done something awry, you have to play it safe.
4 – In the meantime it’s normal : by moving forward dangerously and going for broke on a gamble he was heading straight for disaster, that could not work
5 – Oh, you seem a bit off-colour.. No, it was quite a busy day.. I prefer to skip dinner since I feel I’ll soon be in the arms of Morpheus

As one always does, we thought of ourselves as immortal, so Sam’s coronary at the age of fifty-two came like a bolt from the blue. With doctors warning of another one being imminent if he didn’t change his lifestyle which involved too much travelling, too much entertaining of clients and too little exercise, we returned to England in the summer of ’99 with no employment and a couple of boys in their late teens who had never seen their homeland.

III – Working with words

He carried the HEAVY tool he had BORROWED and, under the SHADE of a CRIMSON maple, he BURIED the stolen DIAMOND, UNLESS he was seen, he was safe now and THEREFORE can enjoy the fruit of his theft but for that, he MUST remain hidden for a while (47)

Here we are, the clientele is back and on the alert despite the heat... Hope everything is ok for you and you enjoyed some holiday..?

I) Translate into English :
You alone have what it takes to fend for yourself... Your friends still have to learn it and believe me, I'll teach them.
= what it takes to …
- se débrouiller seul = to manage alone/ to figure it out on his own/ work it out on his own/ get by on his own/ to get by (plutôt financier) / fend for yourself/ to be self sufficient

According to what he says, the golden rule of the Universe is that nothing or nobody is bad purposely/ intentionally/on purpose. In fact, he must be right because every cloud has a silver lining... I've seen that happen very often.
- rien ni personne ne fait exprès d’être mauvais : nothing or nobody is bad purposely/ intentionally/on purpose.
- il doit avoir raison = quasi certitude au présent = he must be right
- A quelque chose, malheur est bon = every cloud has a silver lining... = Tout nuage a sa doublure d’argent.
- je l’ai souvent vérifié = I've seen that happen very often. / I’ve been there before/ it turned out /that way/ turned to be so very often.

You didn't trust him and you were right not to. Watch your back and look out for yourself; keep your eye on both of them. They're both blood hounds, one by trade, the other one by disposition. If they sense you've done anything wrong, you will have to play this very carefully.
- Surveiller ses arrières = Watch your back/ cover your rear/ your ass = vulgaire/ cover your backsides is more polite/ to cover yourself/ves/ just to make sure we're covered
- Faire attention à = be careful of stg/ mind (UK)/ watch out for (US)/ look out for /
- Garder un oeil sur = keep an eye on /
- Avoir l’impression que = have the impression that/ be under the impression that/ have a hunch that/ sense that/ If they sense anything wrong,
- Se la jouer = pretend to be / act / put on an act/ show off/ to play it/

Maxwell 4.
That said, it’s quite normal : moving forward/ progressing/ haphazardly, risking it all on a gamble, he was heading for disaster : it couldn’t work…
ex. Il travaille le dimanche ? C'est dur !
- Oui, en même temps, s'il n'a pas d'argent... » = that said/ with that in mind / at the same time/
- à avancer comme ça au petit bonheur la chance = moving forward/ progressing/ haphazardly, risking it all/ on a gamble,
- tout risquer sur un coup de poker = going for broke on a gamble/ a game of bluff/ to roll the dice/ double or nothing/ - il allait droit dans le mur : he was running straight into the wall/ he was heading for disaster

Maxwell 5. : -Oh !
Oh ! You’re looking quite out of sorts… - Well! That day wasn’t exactly a walk in the park… I’d rather skip dinner as I feel I/ won’t be long to/ ’ll soon/ fall asleep.
-« tu n’a pas l’air dans ton assiette »= You’re looking quite out of sorts/ you’re feeling under the weather/
- Ne pas être de tout repos = hardly to be restful/ not exactly a walk in the park.

(2) = –Idiom- 27. bolt from the blue, a sudden and entirely unforeseen event: His decision to leave college was a bolt from the blue for his parents. Also, bolt out of the blue.

(4) « a couple of boys in their late teens = 2 garçons de 17, 18 ou 19 ans.

- DIAMOND – SHADE - CRIMSON - HEAVY - (to) BORROW - (to) BURY – UNLESS – THEREFORE + MUST employé à n’importe quel temps.

- MUST I remind you that UNLESS you give me back the HEAVY cut DIAMOND you BORROWED from me, my bullet will paint your face red with a SHADE of CRIMSON; THEREFORE, are you still BURYING your head in the sand ? (40)

- I want to pay back the money I BORROWED FROM you, THEREFORE I MUST recover the HEAVY asket, CRIMSON colored, full of DIAMONDS which was BURIED by my grandfather, in the SHADE of the poplar in the garden, UNLESS you wipe my debt.

- UNLESS there are clouds, when the sun goes down, SHADE will cover locus, the sky will be tinted CRIMSON, small DIAMONDS will burst in the heavenly vault; my feet BURIED in the sand. I will have A HEAVY heart, I shall BORROW this memory. Dreams THEREFORE MUST sparkle...

- I had finally made it, the perfect diamond; though I had to borrow my master’s secret books, and eventually bury once and for all my own imperfections, now I could finally see its unusual shape through its distant shade, magnified by the crimson sparkle of its reflection, with my own eyes:
oddly enough, its sound would make it seem as if it must have been somewhat heavy, but it was not, unless carried by the sole tip of a finger, therefore I must have come to the conclusion that: “what remains silent may hide deeper secrets and treasures, do not allow your ears to dictate what your eyes may see”.

- THEREFORE, to appear more beautiful, She found nothing better than BORROW a CRIMSON and HEAVY pure DIAMOND to BURY her hen party ; UNLESS we were completely stupid, we understood that we HAD TO be discrete rather than put her in the SHADE ! 41

- UNLESS the burglar is very much mistaken, he MUST absolutely BURY his HEAVY loot containing lots of gems like blue sapphires, rough DIAMONDS, green emeralds and CRIMSON rubies; THEREFORE he has begun to dig a hole in the ground, in the SHADE of the trees, with the tools he had previously BORROWED from his friends.

- He carried the HEAVY tool he had BORROWED and, under the SHADE of a CRIMSON maple, he BURIED the stolen DIAMOND; UNLESS he was seen, he was safe now and THEREFORE can enjoy the fruit of his theft but for that, he MUST remain hidden for a while (47)

- My doctor is sort of a rough DIAMANT: yesterday BORROWING a strange smile, he faced me in the SHADE, turning CRIMSON: « My son … » I saw THEREFORE I understand all his feelings, UNLESS I BURIED my head in the sand, I saw his HEAVY heart… He was about to cry, I told him: « you MUST be helped Doctor! » 59 words.

- In the CRIMSON ground, I noticed a strange thing having the same SHADES as a DIAMOND; THEREFORE, I was thinking: I MUST find and BORROW a shovel in order to dig up this stone UNLESS it is a DIAMOND. (38)

- The DIAMOND, wrapped in a CRIMSOM cloth, packed in a metal box, was BURIED in a churchyard of the county, beneath THE SHADE OF A tree, nearby a HEAVY tombstone BORROWED from an old grave which markED the place, making THEREFORE impossible to find it, UNLESS you possessED the map, which MUST have been hidden somewhere in the mansion’s library. 57

Here we are... Finally, Joe offers us a poem...

The red sun is pasted in the sky like a wafer,
Whilst balm-crickets are singing their thoughtless song,
In this sultry August day.
What about a bit of fresh air to breathe?
I wish it were, but there’s no way! Encore et pour tout !
